EASTERN CAPE

The Eastern Cape is a land of undulating hills, endless sweeps of sandy beaches, majestic mountain ranges and emerald green forests.

TOURIST ATTRACTIONS:

1 The Nelson Mandela Museum near Umtata offers visitors an inspiring journey through the life of Nelson Rolihlahla Mandela.

2 Addo Elephant National Park is one hour’s drive from Port Elizabeth. The 300 elephants in the park are the main attraction, but the visitor will also encounter buffalo, black rhino, warthog, eland and kudu. The park offers a wide variety of game viewing, outdoor adventure, accommodation and cultural experiences.

3 Grahamstown National Arts Festival: The biggest and most vibrant celebration of South Africa’s rich and multi-faceted culture. This quaint Eastern Cape city is transformed into a creative crucible and for 11 days in July. From theatre to dance, opera to cabaret, fine art to craft art, classical music to jazz, poetry readings to lectures, every art form imaginable is represented in one of the most diverse festivals in the world.

4 Hole in the wall: Situated near Coffee Bay, this prominent and unique rock formation, detached from the land, has a giant opening carved through its center by the waves.

5 East London is South Africa’s only river port city and offers sweeping white beaches extending for miles. Its interesting hinterland is rich in local culture and history.

6  Hogs Back: The village is magnificently situated on the slopes of the Amatole Mountains, overlooking rivers and fertile plains in a region dominated by three ridges said to resemble the bristles on a hog’s back. Rivers tumble prettily to the plain, creating a number of small but spectacular waterfalls such as Madonna and Child, Swallowtail and Kettlespout.

8 Port Elizabeth: A superb holiday mecca, the city offers an unbeatable and diverse mix of eco-attractions: scenic nature trails, magnificent wildlife experiences, 10km long, golden beaches, historic heritage and a unique coastal climate - rated fourth best weather in the world!

9 Graaff-Reinet: Cradled in a crook of the Sundays River, to the approaching traveller, Graaff-Reinet seems like a verdant oasis in the stark surrounding landscape. Graaff-Reinet is home to more National Monuments than any other town or city in South Africa.

10 Hot Springs: Situated in Aliwal North, this is one of the country’s most popular inland resorts. The spa has large thermal pools as well as saunas and a gym. The town is rich in rock art.
