1 The Nelson
Mandela Museum near Umtata offers visitors an
inspiring journey through the life of Nelson
Rolihlahla Mandela.
2 Addo Elephant
National Park is one hour’s drive from Port
Elizabeth. The 300 elephants in the park are
the main attraction, but the visitor will also
encounter buffalo, black rhino, warthog, eland
and kudu. The park offers a wide variety of
game viewing, outdoor adventure, accommodation
and cultural experiences. |
3 Grahamstown
National Arts Festival: The biggest and
most vibrant celebration of South Africa’s rich
and multi-faceted culture. This quaint Eastern
Cape city is transformed into a creative crucible
and for 11 days in July. From theatre to dance,
opera to cabaret, fine art to craft art, classical
music to jazz, poetry readings to lectures,
every art form imaginable is represented in
one of the most diverse festivals in the world.
4 Hole in
the wall: Situated near Coffee Bay, this
prominent and unique rock formation, detached
from the land, has a giant opening carved through
its center by the waves. |
5 East London is South Africa’s only
river port city and offers sweeping white beaches
extending for miles. Its interesting hinterland
is rich in local culture and history.
6 Hogs Back: The village is
magnificently situated on the slopes of the
Amatole Mountains, overlooking rivers and fertile
plains in a region dominated by three ridges
said to resemble the bristles on a hog’s back.
Rivers tumble prettily to the plain, creating
a number of small but spectacular waterfalls
such as Madonna and Child, Swallowtail and Kettlespout.

9 Graaff-Reinet: Cradled
in a crook of the Sundays River, to the approaching
traveller, Graaff-Reinet seems like a verdant
oasis in the stark surrounding landscape. Graaff-Reinet
is home to more National Monuments than any
other town or city in South Africa.
10 Hot Springs: Situated
in Aliwal North, this is one of the country’s
most popular inland resorts. The spa has large
thermal pools as well as saunas and a gym. The
town is rich in rock art.
